MATHS SUMMARY TEST 3
31st May 2010 Some of S1 are going to be having a another maths test. Tests start next week so get revising!
UKMT MATHS CHALLENGE
10th May 2010 Four of Dumfries Academy’s finest young mathematicians took on the cream of Cumbria and South West Scotland in the UK Mathematics Trust Team Challenge in April. The four were Chanelle Milligan and Rhys Williams from S2 and Duncan Blandford and Frazer McLean from S1. There were four rounds including a head-to-head in which they competed directly against other teams, a cross-number puzzle with a twist – each pair could only see half the clues! – and a final relay round which saw the pupils charging the length of the Caldew School gym brandishing answer papers as they strove to finish all the question in the time allotted.
Chanelle, Rhys, Duncan and Frazer proved to be great ambassadors for Dumfries Academy should be proud of their achievements against very strong competition which included St Joseph’s and Lockerbie Academy from our own area.
An excellent performance from S3 pupils in the UK Mathematics Trust Intermediate Challenge saw the group achieve a spectacular haul of 14 certificates. Certificates are awarded to the top 40% of those taking part in the problem-solving challenge, which means certificate winners are achieving at a very high level compared to their year group nationally. Ten pupils achieved bronze certificates and three got silver certificates – this alone would have been a good result for Dumfries Academy but the icing on the cake was a gold certificate for Fraser Hogg, an achievement which has not been matched at the school in the past six years. Well done to all those who took part, to the fourteen certificate winners and hats off to Fraser!
Bronze Certificates: Liam Watson, Kirsty Blandford, Megan Gurney, Ryan Gittens, Jack Thin, Lee Bailey, Chris Lowther, Rachel Sommerville, Finlay Kingan, Megan Campbell
Silver Certificates: Ross Cowie, Beth Ashby, Kirsty Strachan
Gold Certificate and Best in School: Fraser Hogg
MATHS AND ENGINEERING ROADSHOW
5th November 2009 On Monday 21st, first, second, and third years of Dumfries Academy, Dumfries High School and Langholm Academy had the pleasure of meeting Doctor Peter Hughes. Doctor Hughes is a doctor of engineering who was awarded an OBE in 1999 for his service to the Steel Industry. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Engineers.
We found out a lot of information about careers in engineering. He told us about the importance of engineering for Scotland and what benefits it has. Engineering is Scotland’s biggest export, and brings in the most of the profit for Scotland. He told us about how to become an engineer, the salary and many other things about the job. Dr Hughes is a very talented man, not only does he have an OBE but he can play several different musical instruments, such as the guitar, the mandolin and the stick. Not only were the instruments interesting but to keep the audience engaged he was giving the pupils who answered a question correctly or participated a five pound note.
All in all, it was a great presentation, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Report by Katie Clark and Clark Litster
UK INTERMEDIATE MATHEMATICAL CHALLENGE
5th November 2009 The results are just in for the United Kingdom Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, and, as is the norm, our Academy pupils have performed exceptionally well – 1 silver, and 8 bronze; special congratulations to Katie Clark for her silver award.
The United Kingdom Intermediate Mathematical Challenge is targeted at the top third of pupils in S3 and S4 – however we have only entered S3 this session, though S4 will also be having a go from next session, so the number of awards is set to rocket. The competition encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve non-standard problems. The problems are designed to make students think, and hopefully sometimes smile.
